It&#8217;s about safety advocates changing language use from a car <strong>accident<\/strong> to a car <strong>crash<\/strong>. The AP recently revised their style guide. Dr Rosekind of the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is on board, saying,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWhen you use the word accident, it\u2019s like, \u2018God made it happen.&#8217;\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The thinking is that &#8216;accident&#8217; may make us shrug our shoulders and think, oh well, what can you do, accidents happen. &#8216;Accident&#8217; may trivialize that most common cause of traffic incidents: human error. Which in turn is influenced by bad design, pressures, expectancies, complexities, on and on. The &#8216;perfect storm&#8217; or &#8216;normal accident&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/05\/23\/science\/its-no-accident-advocates-want-to-speak-of-car-crashes-instead.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1052\" src=\"http:\/\/innerairmanship.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/NTSBAsiana214.jpg\" alt=\"NTSBAsiana214\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.innerairmanship.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/NTSBAsiana214.jpg 2000w, https:\/\/www.innerairmanship.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/NTSBAsiana214-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.innerairmanship.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/NTSBAsiana214-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.innerairmanship.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/NTSBAsiana214-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.innerairmanship.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/NTSBAsiana214-200x133.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2000px) 100vw, 2000px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Of course, in todays litigious society, it may seem like we are really just looking for someone to blame, someone to sue. I found it fascinating that Dr Peter Norton, a historian and associate professor of engineering, says that companies started using the word &#8216;accident&#8217; in the early 1900s to protect themselves from the costs of caring for workers injured on the job:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Relentless safety campaigns started calling these events \u2018accidents,\u2019 which excused the employer of responsibility.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And that in the 1920s auto-industry interests borrowed the word to shift focus away from the cars themselves. Dr Norton again:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Automakers were very interested in blaming reckless drivers.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This makes me want to join the <a href=\"http:\/\/crashnotaccident.com\">It&#8217;s a crash. Not an accident<\/a> movement. As they say:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Before the labor movement, factory owners would say &#8220;it was an accident&#8221; when American workers were injured in unsafe conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Before the movement to combat drunk driving, intoxicated drivers would say &#8220;it was an accident&#8221; when they crashed their cars.<\/p>\n<p>Planes don\u2019t have accidents. They crash. Cranes don\u2019t have accidents. They collapse. And as a society, we expect answers and solutions.<\/p>\n<p>Traffic crashes are fixable problems, caused by dangerous streets and unsafe drivers. They are not accidents. Let\u2019s stop using the word &#8220;accident&#8221; today.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/crashnotaccident.com\">www.CrashNotAccident.com<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>What do you think?
